The asymmetrical lines of the American Loft Building command attention on the Philadelphia skyline. This 11-story tower in the Northern Liberties section of the city is an exercise in bold geometry. The building’s exterior is a series of interlocking L-shaped sections of black and gray that contrast in a striking way. The zoning envelope mandated that the structure stand on concrete columns over an open parking area, which created significant design challenges. The architect’s vision to create a smooth transition from the building structure to the open area below was realized with large radiused panels.
